Translated Hillsong worship songs was about the only thing that made a little sense to me during the last three Spanish Every
Nation church services I attended in Lima. I could recognise the melody but was still unable to sing with. At least I recognised the melody… My two sentence translation of the last church service I attended said that the message was about focussing on what God gave you to do and to not be distracted by anything or anyone. I might not have understood what was being preached during that church service but yesterday I surely got the message about how important it is to focus.
First ODI Cricket Game of the Tour: South Africa vs New Zealand, 19 January 2013, Paarl. Normally I do the field spotting in the shorter version of the games. The evening before the game I made sure I recognise all the players and familiarised myself with their playing style. When I got to the game I was told to do the official linear scoring. Fortunately I did take my full scoring bag with me. I have been scoring since I was 12years old and starting scoring professionally when I was 16 years old. I have done a couple of International games as well as a World Cup. This was nothing new or to stress about.
We had bad internet connection from the start of the game. This does not really affect me but it causes the internet scorer to not be on track with the game as it is happening. We are a team so many things all around me were done to try and better the connection. After lunch during the second innings all our skills got tested. Oops a break in transmission, Super Sport are having problems…we apologise. The game is still continuing and except for the internet scorer everything is as normal. It must be the rain in Johannesburg …let’s hope Super Sport gets it sorted. Oh no !!!...power failure…there goes the scoreboard. A packed Boland Park, thousands of people, international game and almost nothing is working. Well, almost nothing, I had the book and the game was still continuing. All the fancy equipment and new ways of scoring and ways to communicate the scores to the world was shut down. It all came down to the basics and fundamentals. I then realized that the game is currently being recorded by the two of us, myself and Uncle Kiepie. FOCUS!!!
Everyone is running around all over us and everyone wants to know the updated scores. I cannot help you. My eyes are on the game in front of me and the only person I am allowing myself to hear is my partner, Uncle Kiepie. Cords are being pulled out and put back in, people all around me, like literally over me. Phone calls are being made to India to keep the internet scoring updated, millions of things are happing but I cannot hear you and I cannot see you. I have a game in front of me, the pitch, the field, the umpire and my partner was what I constricted myself to.
I realised in that moment that I could not get distracted by the various things that were happening around me at that moment, although it was very amusing. I had a job to do and may I add that I might have still been jetlagged. Keep yourself awake and do only what was required of you to do…record the game…
We can get so easily distracted by all the things that are happening around us that we forget what the task at hand is. We are facing many social and economic issues at the moment as a country and I know of many people who have their own personal struggles. When all else fails like the power did at Boland Park, the basics and the fundamentals need to be in place. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:37&39). Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
When I started off writing this page, I wanted to speak about goals and getting them done. Being focused on what you are called to do. Right now, I do not know if you can be really certain of what you are called to do. The only thing that I am certain of is the call to love. Love God and love your neighbour!! Let’s keep it basic. Let’s stay focus on our primary call before any other call in this world. Let’s build the Kingdom of God and let’s build the country. Let’s be a people who know how to love in the midst of all we are facing.
