Many people were surprised that I was going to Peru and the common statement will be: “I did not know that you have a heart for Peru”. I don’t!! While in Peru the most frequent ask question was: “Are you a missionary?” maybe, but my answer is no. I am a daughter of God and I am living life in Peru.
I have been on many short term missions mostly in Africa. Heart for the nations, tick it off, Africa- poor people, tick if off, learning new languages- tick if off. I am doing what I must do am I not? I am being a good Christian, a missionary. Is that not our primary goal? I say no!! I have learnt that even all of that can be religion, doing things for God without faith and love.
God has called us to love Him with all our hearts and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves and He has called us to live by faith.
When I went to Lima, I went in faith, knowing that I heard the voice of God to go to this country. So I went because I love him and my love for him plays out in obedience. So what were you doing in Lima? I was living life like I said before. Did you make disciples? Maybe, if discipleship means telling people about Jesus and who they are in Him and encouraging them to do the same.
Missions and sharing the gospel should be an everyday lifestyle. I am either a full time missionary like every other Christian or I am just living life with Jesus. What are You doing? I want to do that too. Where are You going? I am coming!! Who do You have a heart for? Let me love them too.
The nations consist of people and it is those people that I have a heart for. I cannot wait to go back to Peru because I met people that I am on a journey with…
My problem with being nation focused and not people focus is that China becomes a country and a mission field and then we walk past all the Chinese people in our towns and see them as intruders. I have no need to learn your languages or be your friend; I am not planning on going on a mission to China or plant a church there. Learning a language so that we can effectively communicate with people on a mission seems logical and that I can do but will I speak English because my brother in church, at my work or in my class does not understand Afrikaans. Too much to ask!! How about learning Xhosa or Venda or any of our eleven official languages outside of Afrikaans and English so that I can reach my brother? I don’t have time…
Having a heart for people in South Africa might just be more of a challenge. It’s living life, it’s reaching out to my brother and sister of another race or language, it is laying down your life!!
Let’s start loving this rainbow nation of ours that consist of tribes, nations and languages. Let’s build the Kingdom, Everywhere and Everyone.
I do not have a heart for the nations. I have a heart for people. All people and that includes all nations, so I will go if that is Gods call and I will go to my brother next door and in the streets because that is His will.
Love your neighbour like you love yourself. And let’s go!!
Mark 12:30-31 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
